Here, in his latest monthly column reflecting on the news over the past month, our Press and PR Executive Robin Johnson looks at the headlines.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve always believed that what really makes a city is its people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a bit of a clich\u00e9 but it\u2019s true. You can have the most magnificent buildings in the world \u2013 but the beating heart is the citizens who live, work and play in them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Derby is a smallish city compared to others \u2013 but in many ways, that is our strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have an incredibly tight-knit business community \u2013 many of whom are Marketing Derby<\/a> Bondholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are supportive of one another \u2013 and at the same time welcoming to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And they \u2013 along with Marketing Derby itself – are always ready to mobilise at the drop of a hat whenever an opportunity arises (or a crisis) which could impact the whole of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s this attitude that helps make our city so resilient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, \u2018resilience\u2019 was a word which kept coming into my mind time and time again as January went on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, I know what it means \u2013 but it didn\u2019t stop me from picking up my Oxford English Dictionary (yes, I still use a hard copy!) to look up its official definition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Resilience – The quality or fact of being able to recover quickly or easily from, or resist being affected by, a misfortune\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this in mind, perhaps the embodiment of resilience are the staff and volunteers at Derby Museums\u2019<\/a> Museum of Making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back in October, flooding caused by Storm Babet forced this wonderful building on the banks of the River Derwent to temporarily close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time, we all feared the worst \u2013 but it was not long before businesses and individuals started to come forward with offers of support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Happily, at the end of January, the museum opened its doors to the public thanks to the heroic efforts of its management, staff and volunteers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
