I was on my way back from doing a shift in the <a href=\"https:\/\/derbycitylab.com\/\">Derby City Lab<\/a>, talking to members of the public about all the exciting regeneration projects happening in the city now and in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, the song in question that came on the radio was \u2018Something in the Air\u2019 by Thunderclap Newman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve never heard it, I suggest you ask your Alexa, or hop onto Spotify or YouTube, because it\u2019s a cracking tune from the late 1960s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was the lyrics in particular that struck a chord with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCall out the instigators because there&#8217;s something in the air\u201d, it begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then the next line is: \u201cWe got to get together sooner or later, because the revolution\u2019s here &#8211; and you know it&#8217;s right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here in Derby, there\u2019s definitely something in the air \u2013 the revolution is here (in terms of the city\u2019s regeneration), and it certainly feels right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, who are the \u2018instigators\u2019 of this revolution? Well, I\u2019m happy to say there are many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingderby.co.uk\/bondholders\/wavensmere-homes\/\">Wavensmere Homes<\/a> is one. Currently, the developer is completing the final phase of its \u00a3175 million Nightingale Quarter scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-marketing-derby wp-block-embed-marketing-derby\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"sYareZAYvF\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingderby.co.uk\/news\/work-begins-on-175m-nightingale-quarters-final-phase\/\">Work begins on \u00a3175m Nightingale Quarter\u2019s final phase<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Bondholders wowed by new Becketwell Live venue&#8221; &#8212; Marketing Derby\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marketingderby.co.uk\/news\/bondholders-wowed-by-new-becketwell-live-venue\/embed\/#?secret=WRVRtbr3fd#?secret=OSD8WROoAQ\" data-secret=\"OSD8WROoAQ\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingderby.co.uk\/bondholders\/derbion\/\">Derbion<\/a> is also playing its part in Derby\u2019s regeneration revolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September, it was announced that work to transform a new gateway to the city centre was due to start after final funding arrangements for the project were approved by Derby City Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Eastern Gateway, delivered by Derbion and part-funded by the Government\u2019s Future High Streets Fund, will create a new fa\u00e7ade and urban garden, transforming the area opposite the bus station and the eastern entrance to the shopping and leisure destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-marketing-derby wp-block-embed-marketing-derby\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"pZUiE2I1GJ\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingderby.co.uk\/news\/work-on-new-multi-million-pound-city-gateway-to-get-underway\/\">Work on new multi-million-pound city gateway to get underway<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Work on new multi-million-pound city gateway to get underway&#8221; &#8212; Marketing Derby\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marketingderby.co.uk\/news\/work-on-new-multi-million-pound-city-gateway-to-get-underway\/embed\/#?secret=hXcsPWA2Ul#?secret=pZUiE2I1GJ\" data-secret=\"pZUiE2I1GJ\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, if you\u2019ve driven down Ford Street or Agard Street recently, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingderby.co.uk\/bondholders\/university-of-derby\/\">University of Derby\u2019s<\/a> new Business School, which is due to open next year, is looking magnificent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I recently had a look at a virtual 3D tour of the building, and take it from me, it is absolutely stunning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is hoped that all the forthcoming major city centre regeneration projects will have a positive ripple effect, particularly on the high street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But maybe there are signs of this happening already after a recent study by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingderby.co.uk\/bondholders\/cathedral-quarter\/\">Cathedral Quarter<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingderby.co.uk\/bondholders\/st-peters-quarter\/\">St Peters Quarter<\/a> BIDs found an influx of new businesses coming into the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-marketing-derby wp-block-embed-marketing-derby\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"E5wufQ7gcO\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingderby.co.uk\/news\/city-centre-welcomes-over-30-new-businesses-in-space-of-a-few-months\/\">City centre welcomes over 30 new businesses in space of a few months<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; What we, as \u2018Team Derby\u2019, need to do now is to get behind these new schemes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I mean by that is visit them, support them, tell your friends, your family, your neighbours, people you know who have stopped visiting the city centre for whatever reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m a great believer that success breeds success &#8211; and it is likely that the success of schemes will catalyse further regeneration in the city centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allied to that, businesses also need to return to the streets where these \u2018mega schemes\u2019 are anchored &#8211; and feel the benefits of their ripple effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because despite all the negative national stories we\u2019ve seen about Derby this year (most of them spurious, by the way), things are happening in Derby. The city centre is changing for the better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And this is a golden opportunity for the city to shine once more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I shall refer you to the final line of that Thunderclap Newman song: \u201cWe have got to get it together.
