Preliminary works are set to start on the second phase of Derby\u2019s multi-million-pound flood defence scheme, unlocking potential regeneration land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Known as Derby Riverside, the package of works aims to provide significant flood resilience protection to many properties and highways along the east bank of the River Derwent, from Causey Bridge to Derwent Bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n

The project is part of the Our City, Our River (OCOR) flood defence scheme, one of the city\u2019s biggest infrastructure projects \u2013 and follows the awarding of a \u00a338 million contract by Derby City Council to John Sisk & Son (Sisk) to carry out the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The initial works will mainly consist of land clearance, making way for a new flood wall, floodgates and a riverside green area that will provide a controlled corridor for flood waters to pass through the city safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Councillor Carmel Swan, the city council\u2019s cabinet member for climate change, transport and sustainability, said: \u201cAs our climate continues to change, river flooding remains a risk to many homes and businesses in the city centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn just five years we have seen the five highest recorded river levels in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe saw the damage caused by Storm Babet on the left bank of the river, and the need for action is clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWith these works, we will continue to protect properties and future proof our city.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The OCOR programme is one of the Environment Agency\u2019s largest local authority-led projects and has already delivered enhanced flood protection to over 2,000 properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Derby Riverside will extend this protection to the east bank of the Derwent and unlock the potential for regeneration in this part of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The land clearance will include the demolition of selected buildings, as well as some tree removal, something which the city council said was \u201cunavoidable\u201d where trees would obstruct the flow of water in a flood event, or where roots would be damaged due to the location of the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
OCOR includes a scheme to replant more trees in the city than have been lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Already, 583 new trees have been planted around the city, exceeding the 574 that will have been removed throughout the whole scheme by the time Derby Riverside is completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A further 971 new trees are proposed for other sites, taking the total for OCOR to well over 1,400.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sisk regional director Robin Metcalf said: \u201cWe\u2019re proud to be delivering this important project for Derby and are committed to making a positive local impact.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
