Here\u2019s a question for you \u2013 can you remember the first record you ever bought?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I can. It was Pink Floyd\u2019s \u2018Another Brick in the Wall (Part II)\u2019. Well, when I say I bought it, that\u2019s not true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I asked my mum to buy it for me because it was 1979 and I was just coming up to my fifth birthday at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I\u2019d seen the video for the song (which would go on to be that year\u2019s Christmas number one) on Top of the Pops and my young brain had been snared by its catchy guitar hook and the \u2018We don\u2019t need no education\u2019 refrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My plan was to have it played at the primary school Christmas disco \u2013 and watch the look on the teachers\u2019 faces when it reached the lyric \u2018Hey, teacher! Leave those kids alone!\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I went through with said plan \u2013 and I remember the teachers smirking at my mischievousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ultimately, the ruse backfired as my teachers had the temerity to get up and dance to the song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As I grew up, I learned the track was in fact a protest against corporal punishment (something which did not take place at my primary school, I hasten to add).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And despite what the song says, of course, we all need education – which finally brings me on to the headlines for August, which was a great month for our education institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Derby College Group<\/a>, Derby High School<\/a> and Repton School<\/a> all celebrated stellar A Level results for their students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
